A mother’s love is unconditional, filled with sleepless nights, hugs, cuddles and play. It’s hard work, but once you become a mom, you wouldn’t trade that role for anything in the world. This week we highlight one amazing mom nominated through LIUNA Station’s Instagram account. Maria, owner and head sugar artist from Sweet Avenue Cakery is a proud mom raising a beautiful family and running a thriving, gorgeous and delicious cakery! We were so grateful that she was able to shed a little light on what it’s like to run your own business, while raising little humans in honour of Mother’s Day!

Tell us a bit about your business: 

Sweet Avenue Cakery specializes in luxury wedding and special occasion cakes and sweet tables. All confections are scratch baked in a time-old artisan fashion and use only the finest quality, often locally-sourced ingredients. 

What impact has owning your own business had on your family life?

Being a boss mom, as hard as it is, definitely has its perks. I am forever grateful to be able to have flexible hours and be able to hang out and spend time with my kids – school trips, PD days, March break and summer are filled with play, fun and giggles. On the other hand, this also sometimes means working into the wee hours of the night, but for me it is all worth it, if only so that I can be an active figure in my children lives.

What words of wisdom would you give another mom just starting up their business in the event industry?

Being your own boss can be hard, lonely and scary – but it is worth it, so don’t be afraid and definitely go for it!

What is the most rewarding aspect of owning your own business and being a mom?

To be honest, one of the reasons that I’ve started a business is simply because I wanted to be more involved in my kids lives and to be able to just be there for them when and where they needed me. To be able to do just that is the most rewarding aspect of owning my own business. In a way – my dreams truly did come true big time!

What are your children(s) thoughts about you owning your own business? 

I am always filled with so much wonder when I hear the pride in my kids voice when they are talking about me. They are proud to have a mom who despite working hard, has time for them. They are proud to have a mom who creates beautiful things and tries to teach them the beauty of creating as well. They are proud and eager to help out!

What has been the most challenging part about owning your own business and balancing family life?

In 2018, we have welcomed a new addition to our family. Our sweet baby boy arrived in June – right in time for the wedding season, which I must admit was pretty hard. Owning your own business, means that you aren’t able to just take a year off and go on maternity leave. Thankfully, I was able to slow down and pace myself. Support from my husband and other family members was also crucial at that time, but I am happy to say that we did it!
