Tell us a bit about your event you hosted at LiUNA Station!

“LiUNA hosted our wedding rehearsal, ceremony and reception. We had our ceremony in the main lobby, and our reception in the Continental Express Ballroom. We did our first look outside in the garden by the fountain and did our wedding photos onsite. We loved the venue and our 70 guests all had an exceptional time ranging from the delicious food, the beauty of the venue, the atmosphere in general and the amazing staff at LiUNA Station.”

What were some of the sources of inspiration behind the look and feel of your event?

“Almost everything in our wedding was DIY; we had selected LiUNA Station because the venue itself was so beautiful that we wanted the space to be the highlight, and have a somewhat minimal décor to supplement the venue. We loved the look and intimacy of the Continental Express Ballroom, it was the perfect space size for our guest list. LiUNA Station was the perfect fit because we had exceptional support from the entire team right from the start all the way to the end. We loved the entire event space including the gardens out front of the building, it gave us the opportunity to use the entire venue for photos, and including our first look. The main lobby was classy, timeless and the perfect sized space to host our onsite ceremony, the whole event was perfect.”

“The Supreme Anti Pasto Bar! NO QUESTIONS ASKED! We first had our tasting at the Valentine’s Day Gala at LiUNA Station back in February and knew right there that this was a must needed thing on our menu. Patricia, our event planner, helped customize our menu to ensure we had exactly what we envisioned for our event. Our entire family and guests couldn’t stop talking about how amazing it was, definitely the highlight of dinner.”

What is the one piece of advice you would give someone planning their big day!

“Take your time evaluating your venue, and make sure you have full confidence in what they can deliver for your wedding preparation and support leading up to the big day. LiUNA Station was the perfect venue for us, as we could have our entire event from rehearsal dinner, ceremony and reception onsite. It was a convenient flow of events for all our guests which was part of the reason why we fell in love with this place the moment we saw the venue in person. What moment during your event will forever be etched into your memory?

“Our personalized vows to each other after our first look by the fountain in the gardens. We were surrounded by our closest family and wedding party.  

Honourable mention to the fire alarm briefly going off during dinner (Not LiUNA’s fault!) and us taking the opportunity to capitalize and get a photo op with the Hamilton Fire Department truck outside of the venue. Everyone had a laugh out of that. The photos we took were some of our absolute favourites actually!”

Tell us a bit about your event you hosted at LiUNA Station!

We had our wedding reception in Grand Central Ballroom on May 24, 2025—full of love, laughter and the sweetest memories shared with family and friends.

What were some of the sources of inspiration behind the look and feel of your event?

We loved the heritage aspect of LiUNA and the fact that it’s right downtown Hamilton! Since we met on James Street, and so much of our life together has been centered downtown, it felt special to host our wedding in the heart of the city and show guests this beautiful venue. For inspiration, we leaned into the season—spring—with lots of fresh greens in our florals instead of the typical Easter pastels.

The lasagna was incredible—we had so many compliments on it! We’d been warned we probably wouldn’t eat much on the wedding day, but honestly, we ate more than usual because the food was that good.

What is the one piece of advice you would give someone planning their big day!

Set up the day so that you can actually enjoy it, not run it. For us, that meant relying on LiUNA’s attentive staff, our amazing day-of coordinator, and my sister, who stepped in to make the bigger decisions. We told our people we didn’t want to hear about any drama unless something was literally on fire.

What moment during your event will forever be etched into your memory?

Dancing to our band, Stereoflavour. Dancing with our guests all night long and seeing the dance floor packed is something that we will never forget!

LS: Tell us a little bit about yourself and your husband?

RM: Nicholas and I are a fun loving, down to earth couple that loves to go on adventures! We are the happiest when we are surrounded by our family and friends.

LS: How did Nicholas pop the question?

RM: My husband made our proposal very special. He secretly worked behind the scenes and made a short film which he inserted into the previews of a current movie. We went to the movie theatre like any normal Saturday. Nicholas made sure that we got to the movies really early so we could get good seats. As we waited for the previews to start he was all nervous and jittery. We patiently waited. Then all of sudden he was on the big screen, I can’t even remember what was said in the video, but there was my leading man down on one knee!

LS: There are so many wedding and event venues out there – what made LIUNA Station stand out among the rest?

RM: Out of all the venues we researched LIUNA made us feel that they were going to take care of all of our needs. They answered all of our questions and calmed all of our concerns. Also LIUNA is absolutely beautiful and fit our theme Gatsby Miami nights perfectly!

LS: Tell us about your experience working with your suppliers/vendors?

RM: All of my vendors were a dream to work with. Each and every vendor took the time to listen to our thoughts and concerns. They ensured we worked as a team to make the day perfect. My wedding planner Vivian was simply amazing. She ensured all my ideas came to life in the most amazing way. She coordinated the entire day!

LS: Describe the meal that was served on your wedding day?

RM: We had the premium antipasto bar to start. The pasta was fazzolletti served in a Genovese sauce, entree was a fillet mignon served with a jumbo prawn, wild mushroom risotto and grilled veggies. Our dessert was a double chocolate caramel cheesecake. Everything was so delicious, I wouldn’t have changed any of the details of the menu! Nicholas drink was a Manhattan and mine was a Aperol Spritz.

LS: Drooling…

LS: Describe the quality of service you received at LIUNA Station?

RM: Honestly, everything on the big day was perfect! All LIUNA staff members made sure everything was executed without a hitch.

LS: Looking back, what would you say is your favourite memory from your special day?

RM: Every time Nicholas and I think back to our wedding day, we always talk about the first time we saw each other at the church. It was one of the most emotional part of our day. We were celebrating our love for one another in front of all our family and friends.

LS: Would you recommend LIUNA Station to a friend for his or her next event? If so, why?

RM: Absolutely! LIUNA worked with my husband and I to make our day so special. The staff ensured all the details were perfect.

With the crazy warm weather Hamilton has been having it doesn’t quite feel like winter or the holidays. Today our staff shared our fondest and most hilarious holiday stories. All the stories involved quality time with family: cooking up a storm, recovering renegade Christmas trees that have decided to bail from the roof of the car, almost setting the house on fire, skyping family overseas, family snowball fights, slipping into a food coma after family dinner to loud and bilgerent family members (we all have ’em). It was very heartwarming. Not surprisingly, a lot of stories involved cooking, hosting and favorite recipes.

We decided to get into the holiday spirit by sharing a super easy and delicious sugar cookie recipe! We also tossed in a bunch of tips on how to make them look “pinterest worthy” and how to make it a painless and easy for kids to get involved.

Have fun and enjoy making memories!

 Cookies

1.5 cups butter softened (Yes, I know. Try not to think about it)
2 cups granulated sugar
3 eggs
1.5 teaspoons vanilla extract (or almond/peppermint)
4.5 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for rolling
2 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt

Frosting

2 cups powdered sugar
2-3 tbsp. milk
1 tsp. vanilla extract (or almond/peppermint)
Food coloring

Directions

Mix Butter and Sugar together. Add eggs and extract. Slowly add in your dry ingredients. Don’t over mix. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and chill for an hour or two.  Flour a table and roll dough. Cut out shapes and cookies. Lay on tray lined with parchment paper.

Bake 8-10 minutes at 350. If you have never made sugar cookies before, they tend to not look “done” they will be soft to the touch but harden once pulled out of the oven.

Let cool and prepare the icing.

In separate bowl mix 2 tbsp milk in icing. Add more milk if you like it runnier. If you are piping or doing intricate details – keep the icing thicker. It will stay better and can be manipulated easier. Mix in different bowls and add food colouring. Put icing in piping bags or plastic squeeze bottles (so much easier and less messy for kids!)

Tips: 

• “Flooding” – to fully ice the cookie, start by piping a border close to the edge of the cookie (but not so it falls off). Then slowly start filling in the cookie, the icing will settle and blend into itself. If you are doing layers of coloured icing – like decorating a Christmas tree –  make sure to let each layer dry so the colours do not blend.
• Squeeze Bottles – So much easier to clean and handle for both adults and kids alike! Use safety pin to make smaller openings for details.
• Make sure to let each layer of icing settle and dry before using another colour. Otherwise the colours will run.
• FUN TWIST: For Cinnamon Bun Sugar cookies – add cinnamon and nutmeg to sugar cookie mix. Frost with Cream Cheese icing and sprinkle with cinnamon.

The Simplest Way to Tackle your Guest List!

• What size you would like your wedding to be?
• What Venue/Ballroom do you have. What is its capacity?
• Are you inviting full families or is it adults only? Be very clear about this.
• Make Two Lists of Guests: DEFINITELY and MAYBE
• Figure out how many spots you have left and then look at your MAYBE list
• Discuss this list with your partner. As yourselves the following questions.
  • Does your partner know them. Should they know them?
  • Have I talked to them or met up with them within this year?
  • Did I go to their wedding or would I be invited to their wedding?
  • Am I only inviting them because my parents want me to or feel obligated to?
  • Will their presence make your parents or in-laws happy
  • Is there a good reason NOT to invite them? Whether they are get belligerent or are prone to disastrous moments – trust your gut instinct on this one. Sometimes there are acceptable reasons to not invite someone, especially if they don’t meet the above criteria.
• Ensure your RSVP date is a decent enough time to do a second mail out and give your venue your final numbers and any allergy info – don’t leave this to last minute.
• Have the standby list and invites ready. If  people RSVP no – send out more invites. Don’t worry that you will offend anyone. 2 rounds of invites is normal.

Other Tips and Suggestions:

• Who is footing the bill? If your parents or in-laws are throwing in a large chunk of money, it is polite and fair to ask them their opinion on the guest list.
• Sides: Try not to be too picky on how many people from each “side of the family” or  friends. You are all family now. If the person is important to your partner make sure they are present.
• Co-Workers. Remember some co-workers are close friends. Don’t disregard them just because you don’t want to start inviting coworkers.
• Don’t succumb to pressure or guilt. If it is really not in your budget don’t invite them or hold off to see how many people respond in a first around of RSVP’S.

Preparation is EVERYTHING.

The rehearsal is more important than you think and many are opting out of doing one. You can have everything laid out on paper but trust us when we say, practice makes perfect. There are actually 2 things you should rehearse: The Ceremony Processional & Recessional and The Ballroom Entrance – especially if you have something different, funky or unique planned.

When you have your wedding rehearsal here at Liuna Station we try to have the Event
Supervisor who will be your go-to person on the day is running your rehearsal. This lets US see what you are envisioning so WE can prepare for anything that may or can go wrong. We will ask you all the appropriate questions and probably some that you haven’t even thought of! We have seen thousands of ceremonies and can offer suggestions and tips to help. We will take note of the order that everything is happening in, who is walking when and where, what you should let your officiant know, etc.

The other thing you should consider rehearsing is the Ballroom Entrance. Many couples leave this part out. It doesn’t have to be done at the venue itself, but it is important to rehearse so there is less stress for everyone on the day. Another suggestion we have is: let someone YOU know announce the names of the couples entering the ballroom. DJ’s are usually pretty good at this but to ensure everyone’s name is pronounced correctly it is better to have an energetic  friend or family member do it.  The DJ may not know if you had to switch something last minute but a family member or close friend would now it is X person at the door instead of Y and can make the appropriate adjustments.

Recently we have noticed tons of clients raving about Boudoir Photography and Photoshoots which are making a trendy comeback. What a fun sassy idea for those Brides, Grooms or Couples wanting to try something different or add some spice to their special day! Photographers are shaking things up by expanding their traditional services to include popular client requests such as summer beach shots, glam photos, sultry silhouettes & vintage pin-up makeovers to produce tastefully risqué shots.

There are many different things you can express within your boudoir portraits! You can dress up in full sexy lingerie; You can have the romantic feel of rolling around in the morning bed sheets; Sometimes you just love laying around in that big soft sweater, and that subtly and softness can produce the best boudoir photos. You don’t have to do traditional shots either!

If serious lingerie shots aren’t your cup of tea, make it personal, funny and creative! The most important thing is confidence and letting your photos reflect you. Use your qualities and favorite things in your pictures such as your favorite team, colour, season, a dress shirt and heels, work uniform – the possibilities are endless! Either of you a firefighter? Play with that theme in a photoshoot. Perhaps your wife or yourself are master chefs, foodies or baking aficionados? Toss an apron on capture some shots while you bake up a storm in the kitchen! (Bonus points if you actually gift them what you baked as well as the photos – just saying!). If you aren’t comfortable taking photos baring everything or showing too much skin or feel awkward doing super-sexy photos – you don’t have to! Make them fun by playing into an inside joke or special fandom your partner might like:  superhero shirts are always a good idea.

The photos or albums make a great-morning-of-your-wedding gift but are also a fun idea for Valentine’s Day, Christmas or Anniversaries!  If you have been looking to step outside of your comfort zone try a photoshoot or a couple’s photo session!
